2002 Drawing Show

Two Columns presents 2002 Drawing Show, curated by Mark Anderson.  This is an exhibition of works on paper by alumni from the class of 2002 in the Fine Arts Department at Ringling College of Art + Design.  The exhibition is open from December 4, 2013 to January 13, 2014.  Please come to the reception  January 13, 5-8pm.

"In 1999 when the class of 2002 were freshmen, the Fine Arts department took a bus full of students and went to the Harn Museum for a contemporary art show.  Since this was in Gainesville we contacted the college for a talk about graduate school.  When the chair of graduate studies first talked with our students, they were told that only one of them would be making art in ten years.  I left the room.   Of the 22 students from 2002 most are still making art.  Many of them have MFA’s also, just not from Florida.  Here are a list of the schools I have for MFA’s from the class of 2002,  Montclair in New Jersey, San Francisco Art Institute, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Claremont Graduate University, Bard College, University of South Florida, Boston University,  Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, University of Texas at San Antonio.  Several have taught at the college level.

As seniors, their work was shown in Jacksonville, Florida in The 2nd Annual Regional Graduate Honors Exhibit with graduate students from the University of Georgia and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Jarrod Anderson draws and works for sculptor Jim Hodges and lives in Brooklyn. His drawings were used in Dennis Coopers book of poetry the Weaklings.

Mapping a Site: In and Out of Context

Ringling College sponsors International Student Art Project

Ringling College of Art and Design is hosting students and faculty from Aalto University in Finland, Sint Lucas College of Art and Design and the Royal Academy in Antwerp, Belgium from November 1-November 10th.

The project is called “Mapping a Site: In and Out of Context” and includes faculty and students from multiple artistic disciplines including photography, fine art, motion design and graphic design. The goal of the project is to provide students the opportunity to work collectively outside of the classroom analyzing a pre-determined site from multiple cultural and artistic perspectives. This year’s site is Spanish Point. The results of the student’s collective and individual responses to the site will be on view at Two Columns in downtown Sarasota at 1947 Ringling Blvd. on Saturday, November 9th from 5-8PM. All are welcome.

The Ringling College faculty and students who are participating in the project will be travelling to Antwerp, Belgium in March to “map’  sites in that city for part two of the experience.

MANA is formed by Ringling students, alumni and artists from the community that are working towards generating a space for experimental filmmaking.

The gallery will be open at 8:00 pm on October 24th.  The performance will start at 8:30. The artifacts from the performance will be on display until November 1.

Chemical Abuse

Two Columns presents Chemical Abuse, a solo exhibition of paintings by Hunter Slade.  This exhibition displays 11 paintings on canvas and panel created by the artist this past year.  These works demonstrate a dedicated studio practice informed by multiple approaches to create visual experiences through color saturation and texture.   Slade also finds distinction in each piece through the integration of addiction narratives, emphasizing struggle within each composition that also presents an opportunity for resolution.  Hunter Slade is currently a Senior in the Fine Arts Department at Ringling College of Art + Design.

The exhibition is open to the public September 5-20, 2013.  The gallery is free and open to the public Wednesday-Friday from 12-6pm.

Please come to the opening reception on Thursday September 5, 6 - 9pm.

"In my artwork, I represent the sense of a healing and therapeutic power that overtakes me through each piece. I approach this sensitive topic not enhanced nor dumbed down. This is my reality of addiction. My art is a representation of a life with addiction and the horrible never-ending battle of the addiction. As shown in my choice of materials; Tar. This material will stand the test of times along with a slow, dirty, toxic process just like an addiction. Although before a piece is considered finished I transform the once solid black tar piece, and then add color or a gloss like feel. This color then represents the end of the piece and the beauty within the stereotype addict. Each piece I create helps me maintain my journey further from my own addiction. Just like art and solving a piece to the finish, I will always be in the process of solving my own addiction."
